Even the beasts of the 54 original speedsters such as the Audi R8 or Lamborghini Murcielago can be maneuvered around the curves in a completely tame way. Your starter car, a Nissan 240SX, sticks to the road like a magnet, because the developers have uncompromisingly shifted driving behavior towards action. And even on a modern machine, sudden jolts occur again and again, which has a correspondingly negative effect on steering precision. Nevertheless, NfS demands : Undercovera considerably more powerful computer (see technology check). House facades, road surfaces and vegetation look no better than what is now the three-year-old Most Wanted. It is quite possible that the developers want to use the twinkle to distract attention from the terrifyingly weak surrounding graphics. That may be impressive at first, but because everything from the race to the car chase takes place in the early hours of the morning, the permanent backlight will soon get really on your mind. Undercover makes lavish use of blooming and blurring effects. So dazzling that you can only see the area around the track with difficulty. Glaring sunlight shines towards you in the very first illegal street race, in which you are thrown right after the intro. The first impression of Most Wanted – sorry – Undercoveris dazzling. But the law enforcement officers return to Undercover. Because in the scenario of illegal races, of all things, EA renounced the police chases introduced in the first part. What do police officers do at night? Set up lightning traps? Ambush alcohol sinners? No they sleep! At least this was the impression you got in the Need for Speed parts Underground and Underground 2.

How can you have an open world game and not have any cross traffic to contend with in races? The announced “Best of” series turns out to be an uninspired and hardware-hungry racing game off the rack. In other words, there’s no cross traffic to deal with. While transparent arrow walls would have been fine, this restricts not only you and your competition, but the traffic to the set race course as well. It’s the game’s way of putting you in a pre-defined track and not letting you veer from the beaten path. When you take part in any standard race, the game closes off the streets so that you can only drive on the correct route. The open world setting is also ignored in many of the game’s events. Unless just feel like testing out your ride or just feel like exploring, there’s no reason to drive around on your own. You can’t come across any hidden events, new racers or anything of this sort. LEGO Builder’s JourneyĪll of this means that unless you’re running from the cops, there’s absolutely no reason to drive around the city when not in an event. This will load up whatever your nearest event is, or in some cases, the next major event you’re supposed to take part in. To begin an event, you can either head to the overhead map, which requires a couple of seconds of loading despite its utter simplicity, or simply press down on the D-Pad. You cannot even drive to an event to start it or enter your garage. That doesn’t happen one bit in Undercover. The major reason for having an open world is to allow gamers to explore their environment, find new challenges, perhaps some hidden locations and generally hunt down people to race. Part of the reason for this is the game’s complete and utter misuse of its open world setting. It fails on almost every front and is a major step backwards not only for the franchise, but racing games in general.

The end result, however, is a game that has practically zero redeeming qualities. Undercover also seems to be directed right at the casual market, both in terms of presentation and its extremely relaxed learning curve. ProStreet didn’t turn out too well, so Black Box went back to the drawing board and returned to an open world setting with this year’s Need for Speed Undercover, but that wasn’t the only design change.
